The Clean Power Plan: What Every Kansan Should Know

The Clean Power Plan rule is the first regulation to place carbon pollution limits on power plant emissions. Released by the Environmental Protection Agency on August 3rd, 2015, the final Clean Power Plan Rule requires each State to develop a plan to cut power plants’ CO2 emissions by specific targets. Each State’s reductions will contribute to the national goal of reducing Greenhouse Gas emissions by 32% in 2030. The Clean Power Plan expedites the transition to clean energy through renewable energy investments and energy efficiency measures.

The briefing will break down the 1,560 page rule into a comprehensible overview,

  • Clean Power Plan emission requirements and deadlines.
  • How the CPP addresses electricity security, availability, and affordability.
  • Health benefits resulting from the Clean Power Plan reduced C02 emissions.
  • Economic opportunities (jobs, incentives, and credits for low-income communities) resulting from the CPP.

There are many ways that Kansas can meet the CPP goals. How the State chooses to meet the CPP will directly impact the way energy is produced in Kansas. Energy generation affects the economy, the environment, and public health.

These briefings are being presented by Dorothy Barnett of Climate + Energy Project, co-sponsored by Kansas IPL and other local organizations.
